Women's Soccer Ends Season as Region I Division I Runner-Up

Eastern Arizona Women's Soccer traveled this weekend to play nationally ranked #9 Arizona Western for the Region 1, Division 1 Championship.

AWC is a strong nationally ranked team with many experienced sophomores making it a tough outing for our young EAC team.  "I could not be prouder of our ladies and the way they played. We came to play, outshooting AWC and having more corner kicks. We stayed true to what we came to do which was attack and take the game to them," says Coach Long.

The Lady Monsters scored first with a header goal by Emma Lindsey who finished the season with 22 goals and 16 assists consistently sitting at the top of the national leaderboard for goals, assists, and points.

A double assist on the goal from Celiane Pereira who finished the season with 12 goals and 7 assists along with an assist from Maddie Haslam who is the national leader in the NJCAA for assists at 22 together with 5 goals on the season.

Goalkeeper Ashley Zaragoza-Lopez led the defense by making several outstanding saves. "Our midfield possessed the ball and we stuck to our strength which is passing and moving the ball," says Long. In the 66th minute, Arizona Western's Loegan Alia scored to tie the game, and with 10 minutes left Arizona Western's Ashly Martinez scored the winning goal.

"Our ladies never gave up and hit the bar 3 times second half. We were still pushing to tie the game and barely missed tying the game with 2 seconds on the clock, "says Long.

Eastern Arizona College Lady Monsters finished their season as Region 1 Division 1 runners-up. History was made as they brought home Eastern Arizona College's first-ever soccer plaque.

The team finished 11-4-3 with the only losses to nationally ranked teams. They also finished #13 in the United States Soccer Coaches poll.
