Eastern Arizona Baseball Swept by Cochise, Softball Splits with Arizona Western

The Eastern Arizona College baseball and softball teams had a busy weekend. Baseball faced a tough three-game series on the road against Cochise College, and softball split a four-game series with Arizona Western.

Baseball Struggles in Douglas

The Gila Monsters baseball team traveled to Cochise College for a three-game series but fell short in all three matchups.

  • Game 1 (L, 2-12, 5 innings): Eastern struggled to get the offense going as Cochise dominated early. Miles Vandenheuvel contributed with one hit and one run, while Reece Van Devander added a hit, a run, and two RBIs.

  • Game 2 (L, 8-10, 7 innings): Eastern couldn't hold off Cochise despite a much stronger effort. Jalen Ryan led the charge with three runs and two hits, while Vandenheuvel had two hits and three RBIs. Van Devander also chipped in with one hit and one RBI.

  • Game 3 (L, 2-6, 7 innings): The final game saw Eastern again fall short. Vandenheuvel notched two hits and scored a run, but the offense couldn't keep pace with Cochise.

Eastern Arizona baseball now holds a 22-20 overall record and is 12-15 in conference play. They will look to bounce back at home on Tuesday in a doubleheader against Post Grad Sports.

Softball Splits with Arizona Western

The Lady Monsters faced off against Arizona Western in a four-game series, managing to split the weekend with two wins and two losses.

  • Game 1 (L, 5-10): Eastern Arizona led early but errors and a strong rally from Arizona Western turned the tide. Mia Carbonell had a solid outing with two hits and three RBIs. Pitchers Jolissa Valdez (5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 SO) and Destanee Nez (1.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 SO) struggled against the offensive onslaught.

  • Game 2 (W, 10-1): The Lady Monsters responded in a big way, securing a dominant victory. Illeana Cosillos had an impressive performance with one run, two hits, and three RBIs. Ocearn Mathews added two RBIs, while Carbonell again stepped up with two hits and three RBIs. Ailani Rodriguez was excellent on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings while allowing only one earned run.

  • Game 3 (W, 12-3): Eastern Arizona carried their momentum into game three, delivering a commanding win. Marianna Zumerle (5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 SO) controlled the game from the circle while the offense exploded to secure the victory.

  • Game 4 (L, 2-7): The Lady Monsters couldn't complete the series win, falling in the final game. Despite solid efforts from Illeana Cosillos and Jolissa Valdez, Arizona Western's pitching held Eastern's offense in check.

Eastern Arizona softball now stands at 21-10 overall and 12-4 in conference play. They will hit the road next for a series against Yavapai on April 11 and 12.

Both teams will be looking to build momentum as they head into the final stretch of the season.
