Bio

Assistant Baseball Coach Lawrence Chavez graduated from Estancia High School in 2011, where he played on two state championship qualifying teams and was the winning pitcher for the 2011 championship team.

Chavez graduated from Eastern Arizona College with an associate degree in General Studies. In his sophomore season at EAC, he led the Gila Monsters with a .352 batting average. He then received a scholarship to play for Colorado State University-Pueblo. In his senior season with the Thunderwolves, he led the team in doubles and finished the season with a .330 batting average. He was part of a team that achieved over 40 wins in 2015 and set the record for the most conference wins in school history.

In 2016, Chavez began his professional career with the Great Bend Boom, finishing the season with a .300 batting average. In 2017, he played for the Bakersfield Train-Robbers, hitting .280 and leading the team in plate appearances and walks. In 2018 and 2019, he played for the Tucson Saguaros. In 2018, he finished the year with a .343 batting average, 9 home runs, 16 doubles, and a .498 on-base percentage. In 2019, Chavez was named the Pecos League Offensive Player of the Year, finishing the season with a .330 batting average and a .512 on-base percentage. He broke the single-season walks record, which he still holds with 70 walks.

Coach Chavez is entering his 7th season as the Assistant Baseball Coach for the Gila Monsters.

Lawrence Chavez earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Criminology from Colorado State University-Pueblo and a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership/Criminal Studies from Northern Arizona University.
