Men's Soccer Gears Up for First Conference Match

Eastern Arizona College men's soccer team wrapped up a rigorous preseason, taking on five formidable opponents in preparation for the upcoming season. The squad demonstrated their talent and depth in one home match and four challenging away games, facing off against RSL (UPSL), University of the Southwest (NAIA), Eastern New Mexico (NCAA D2), Fort Lewis (NCAA D2 #18), and Adams State (NCAA D2). The competitive matchups provided valuable experience as the team gears up for conference play.

Throughout the preseason, Eastern Arizona showcased a dynamic offense with multiple players finding the back of the net. Joao Martins da Silva, Ronardo Burgher, Davi Barros, and Isaiah Owens all made significant contributions, proving to be reliable goal-scorers for the squad.

The regular season kicked off in style with a strong 3-1 victory over Trinidad State College on August 28. Shunto Shimizu opened the scoring for the season, with assists from Ryuki Kato and Ronardo Burgher. "The second goal came after Davi Barros beat his defender down the wing and delivered a pinpoint cross to Burgher," says Coach Peters. Despite conceding a goal due to a brief miscommunication, which almost saw Guilherme Palacio make a crucial save, the team quickly regained control. Tajay Cummings sealed the win with a well-taken free-kick after being fouled just outside the box. The match was marked by its physicality, resulting in eight yellow cards between the two teams, underscoring the intensity of the competition.

Looking ahead, the men are set for their home opener on September 3rd against Arizona Western, which also marks their first conference game of the season. The team is poised and ready to build on their early success and make a strong statement on their home turf.
